My first grad school class got out early, so I went to look at a pickup I saw on craigslist this afternoon. I liked what I saw. Late-1980s F150 Custom, complete with new DVD player, welded-on cupholder, toolbox, and lumber rack.
It’s above Kelley Blue Book value, probably due to the lumber rack, toolbox, and other non-standard equipment, but I could probably talk the price down a bit.
The only problem is that I have absolutely no valid justification for buying a truck now. Sure, I could help people move or bring home purchases from the hardware store without messing up the Saturn, but that doesn’t mean I need a truck. So I won’t be buying one for now.
But a guy can dream.

I’m sorry to be dense here, but as a former pickup owner, I’m compelled to ask this. Is the “I could help people move” thing in the pro column or the con column? I do like the lumber rack, though.
Steve-
Heh - hadn’t thought of it that way. Reminds me of the bumper sticker that says “Yes, this is my truck. No, I won’t help you move.”
People shouldn’t measure buying a truck based on ‘needing’ it. Base your decision on what would ‘definitely’ happen if a barrage of car-sized meteors came crashing down on the earth. Who’s going to get us–and a large load of our necessary stuff–out of the Seattle limits safely, while weaving through explosive craters?
You in your truck? Or you in your sedan?
think about it.
Mr. Sharp (#),
I would say the Altima’s handling capabilities would better serve us in a crater-dodging escape from Seattle. But yes, I would still like a truck :).
