I’d been reading fool.com for investment advice for about two hours (yes, on a Friday night; I’m that boring) and noticed that my MBP was very hot - about 170F in the GPU diode (consistently the hottest part) according to iStatPro.
Since I was only running Firefox, and it was working fine, I couldn’t figure out why the computer was working so hard. I looked in the “Processes” pane of iStatPro, and saw that a crashed session of Microsoft Word from a few days ago was using 99% of my CPU cycles.
I switched back to Firefox, clicked the Apple menu, and selected Force Quit, then Word. Viola! The GPU diode temperature dropped 20F within 30 seconds.

Yesterday, my MBP was running very hot while I was watching a DVD. Firefox was hogging cycles, so I switched to it and closed it. It wasn’t crashed; it closed normally.
However, when I opened it this morning, it told me updates had been installed. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
