The Last 5

The last 5 American Idol contestants performed tonight, and if the trend holds, more people will vote for them than did for George W. Bush and John Kerry combined. (Granted, Idol lets you vote more than once, but hey. It’s not like Presidential elections never go wonky).

Each singer got to perform twice, since there aren’t as many performances to squeeze in any more. They did a song from their year of birth, and one from the current Billboard charts (though Taylor Hicks appeared to break this rule by choosing a Beatles song).

Kat’s first performance had pitch problems, but she was amazing on her second song. I voted for her.

Paris did a great job on her first song (a Prince selection), but the second song started a little below her pitch range. Good finish, though. I voted for her.

Chris Daughtry rocked on his first song, but the second one was too high for him, and he had some pitch problems. No vote this week (though I still think he most deserves to - and will - win).

Elliott Yamin started the show off with a firecracker rendition of On Broadway. Very energetic. Judges didn’t go for it, and it showed that he can’t really dance that well. I like him, but I think he’s going home.

Taylor Hicks was the only singer to really nail both songs. He was unstoppable, starting with “Play That Funky Music (White Boy)”. He wrapped up the show with the Beatles’ “Something” which was a great choice because it showed off his voice talent, in contrast to the dance-and-wail approach of his first selection. I voted for him. Aaron has liked Taylor all along, but would never blog about it :). He won a fan tonight.

But Aaron raised a good point: Who would listen to Taylor’s music? Chris Daughtry is more the “I’d buy his album” type, at least for us funky white boys.

We’ll see tomorrow who goes home. If you want more detail, go here.

Justin,

I would buy Taylor’s album. I just can’t get enough of that guy. I voted both for him and for Catherine last night and wore out my cell phone battery doing it. (Thank heaven for free after 7:00 plans!)

Taylor truly is my guity pleasure. But, as I said, I would buy his album today. I would buy Catherines recording of her second song today (or at least download it). Unfortunately, I am probably twice your age and not the target demographic for American Idol albums.

But, hey, to get me to part with funds for a CD is an accomplishment bordering on miraculous.
