I just upgraded this site to the 2.0 release of WordPress, which was announced earlier today (though it’s been available for about ten days, without fanfare).
Since WP is a PHP-based system that outputs HTML pages using a template system, readers won’t see any differences (unless something breaks). But some nice changes have been made to the admin interface. My favorites:
- You can create a new category while writing a post (Ajaxed)
- “Import” functions have been integrated more (though it seems like something you’d only use once, so why should it be in the menu permanently?)
- More granular user permissions, which I haven’t used yet
- A WYSIWYG text editor for posting (which I promptly disabled)
Let me know if you see any problems around the site. The comment error, unfortunately, remains a thorn in my side. Still working on it - but your comments will still be saved in the meantime, so comment away.
Update: WP2.0 breaks UltimateTagWarrior 2.8.2, which I was using on this site. Fortunately, Christine Davis is awesome and has already updated the plugin - get version 2.8.9 here.
Update 2: Spam Karma 2 doesn’t work properly - new comments aren’t counted in the “Comments (x)” line below each post. I’m switching to Akismet, which I’ve been wanting to test anyway.

the spacing at the end of each post seems way too tight. An early Happy New Year to you!
Testing Akismet…
Testing Akismet…again…here is a comment about Viagra, cialis, and other pharmaceuticals. What about poker?
Yeah…I wasn’t such a fan of the WYSIWYG editor either…
I gave the WYSIWYG editor a try, but then I saw the code it was creating (and watched it eat some of my own code) and disabled it immediately.
FYI, there’s a fix for Spam Karma that takes care of the comments count problem: http://lair.fierydragon.org/2005/11/sk2-wp2compatibility/
Hey, I found something else on http://www.mattjones.com
Where the mouse is, his name is following it, I think that would be pretty cool.
I was going to upgrade to it, but then I heard that there are a lot of bugs already. I’m thinking maybe I should wait for 2.1. Have you had any problems with it?
Ian-
No problems other than a bit of plugin incompatibility, as mentioned in the updates above. I’ve upgraded a few clients without incident, too.
The killer feature, I just realized, is the new preview feature - it displays your site in an iframe with the draft post showing, so you can see how the new post will look with your template.
ive been using wp2 since day of release and havent had too many issues at all. tag warrior took a tad bit to fix up but what the hey.
i disabled the wysiwyg editor cause i found that it was easier to operate on teh traditional layout.
akismet is much better than spam karma, ive left SK on a couple of blogs and switched the others to akismet… akismet is da bomb.
FYI: in order to use SK2 with the latest version of WP (2.0), you need to upgrade SK to the latest version too: 2.1.
But if you’re happy with Akismet, all the better…
And btw, comment posting generates a SQL error… Might want to look into that…
Yep, still trying to fix that error…thanks for the update on SK2 - a great plugin.
