To be loved by God, not merely pitied, but delighted in as an artist delights in his work or a father in a son - it seems impossible, a weight or burden of glory which our thoughts can hardly sustain. But so it is. —C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

postmodern theology - nailing jello to the wall

Trying to get these emergent guys to define their theology is like trying to nail jello to the wall.

HILARIOUS and brilliant! Two questions though…

1. Could we extend the metaphor and say that “defining their theology” is as useless as nailing Jello to the wall? “To deFINe” means to mark the limits of a FINite subject matter, and God is certainly not finite. Or more colloquially, we can say that you can’t cage Aslan because he’s not a tame lion. You can walk and talk with him, but you can never get him to hold still.

2. It would be easy to accuse Jesus of being equally (if not more) elusive about his theology (Matt 21.23-27, for one example).
