Possible Film & Spirituality Movies [Justin]
I’m considering these movies for future Film & Spirituality events:
Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
What do you think? Do you have other suggestions? (If anyone suggests All Dogs Go to Heaven I’m going to throw a rotten tomato at them).

Haven’t seen 21 Grams. But I think both Signs and 13 Conversations have great potential. I personally enjoyed Signs a lot and thought the potential for spiritual conversation (and just good filmmaking) was strong. My wife — no fan of sci-fi — found the whole alien thing too distracting, couldn’t enjoy it, and therefore didn’t find any engaging spiritual reference either. That may be a problem for some others as well.
13 Conversations is good (and it follows the same kind of narratives structure as “Magnolia” and “Short Cuts” that is so powerful)…
Of the movies you mentioned, I’ve only seen Signs and I think it would be a great one. I’ve got a couple others in mind that might be good if you are ever taking suggestions.
Guess I should read ALL of the post.
Aaron’s suggestions:
Good Saviour correlations
* The Matrix - of course
* St. John in Exile - available only in VHS, a solo stage performance of John reminiscing about Jesus. A few cheesy parts but very good overall.
* 28 Days Later - Very violent with a lot of language, but great symbolism
* Signs - What is faith
* Contact - Interaction of science and faith
* Dogma - Sacreligious and thought-provoking at the same time. Funny.
* Good Will Hunting - Unconditional love
* Bruce Almighty - See Dogma comments
* Braveheart - Long but good, perhaps show only the second half.
* Life is Beautiful - Hope in the midst of suffering
* The Truman Show - The truth is out there
That’s all for now. Happy Friday everyone!
Karl-
I liked Magnolia, but I think I need to watch it again to grasp it.
I also liked Adaptation, though it’s not really spiritual, but more philosophical.
The Mission (Jeremy Irons, Robert De Niro)
The Apostle - Do you yell at God?
Whale Rider - Is there a call on your life?
Chariots of Fire - Do you feel God’s pleasure?
Babylon 5, “Passing through Gethsemane” (season 3, disc 2) - How does one atone for sin? Can you forgive?
13 conversations is very good. Glad you thought of it. I second all of Jon Reid’s suggestions as well, except Whale Rider (which I haven’t seen, but I’ve heard great things about) or Bab 5 (which I haven’t seen). Aaron O. has some good suggestions too, esp. Contact.
21 Grams- How do you deal with life’s harshest realities? What does it mean to be “lost”?
Whale Rider- Women in Leadership, great baptismal imagery, entering from a life of doubt into a life of fulfilment.
Levity- (Billy Bob Thorton, Morgan Freeman, Kirsten Dunst) Forgiveness, Redeeming the time.
Rashomon- Perspectives, Culture differences as well as Dreams.
Justin- Just watched Dead Man Walking… it’s a good one.
